Why visit Zaanse Schans?

The beautiful Zaanse Schans at your feet

Staying at Hotel Zaandijk, you will have the best possible base from where to discover the beautiful Zaanse Schans. We've compiled a short list of things to see and do whilst you're staying with us.

Discover the world of Mills

The Zaanse Schans is world famous for its windmills. Rightfully so, because this is where the industrial revolution started. The wind helped the Dutch to make wanted products. People lived, worked and shipped things on the water; it was a busy city in the early nineteenth century. A unique Dutch landscape in the world.

Verkade Experience

If you are talking about chocolate and the Zaanse Schans, you can't skip the Verkade factory. Right in the middle of the Zaanse Museum is the Verkade Experience, also known as Verkade Paviljoen, where you enter the Verkade chocolate and cookie factory as it looked at the start of the twentieth century. A real experience, you can see the original machines at work.

Hoop Brewery

Are you a beer lover? Make sure to visit Brouwerij Hoop. A great company with an excellent restaurant, but the tour of the brewery will surely surprise you most. When designing the interior of the brewery, it was taken into account that you want to oversee the entire brewery process via a specially constructed hanging bridge.

Amsterdam is nearby

It is only about twenty minutes by train to Amsterdam. The NS station Zaandijk Zaanse Schans is about 650 metres from Hotel Zaandijk. The capital offers the best shopping streets in the Netherlands, great museums and there's restaurants everywhere. Hotel Zaandijk is the place to relax after a day, or night, in Amsterdam.

Restaurant Trattoria la Molina

Do you want to enjoy delicious food while enjoying a view of the river de Zaan? Stay for dinner in the restaurant, which is located on the ground floor of the Hotel Zaandijk. Let our chef surprise you with creations from the Italian kitchen.

You can discover the Zaanse Schaans on foot or by bicycle. Occasionally it rains in the Netherlands, but there is always something to do in Zaandijk. Just plan some visits to museums. Participate in a chocolate making workshop. Or learn how to make clogs. You really don't have to spend all your time on the old history, there are also countless workshops to learn to make or enjoy all the beautiful products that belong to Zaandijk.

Modern Zaandam & Tzar Peter

Are you done visiting Dutch windmills? Go to Zaandam and let its centre, with the many shops and facilities, surprise you. The modern architecture mainly stands out in the city centre, it's real Dutch design. The city has lots of festivals and exhibitions. Zaandam has a small wooden house that is of inestimable historical value: the Tzar Peter House. The tzar learned the ship carpentry craft in Zaandam.

Life is a beach

The north of Holland has tremendous beaches. Fancy a day with sand between your toes and the sound of the surf? Via Amsterdam and Haarlem, which is also a fun stop, you can go to Zandvoort aan Zee. If you prefer a more quiet beach, you can go to Wijk aan Zee.

A wealth of museums

Most visitors go to the Zaanse Museum but do also step into the world of cacao in the Cacao Museum. Visit the windmills, such as De Bonte Hen and let yourself be astonished by the innovative architecture of the windmills in the Molenmuseum (Koog aan de Zaan). In Zaandijk, walk up to the Honig Breethuis and see the grandeur of the former owners of paper mills.
